It works by lowering blood sugar. People with type 2 diabetes may experience some or all of the symptoms of diabetes.
Glucophage XR® (glucophage) is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It also helps to increase the body’s sensitivity to insulin (a hormone that causes excessive thirst and body )] to reduce the amount of excess water and sugar in the blood. This helps to lower the blood sugar levels.
Glucophage XR® works by preventing the body from absorbing glucose. This stops the body from converting into the usable form of the sugar (glucose) in the food or blood. Glucophage can be taken in the morning or evening, with or without food. Glucophage is the only oral diabetes medicine that does not increase blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia). Glucophage XR® has been shown to have an effect in reducing fasting blood glucose (FTG) and total sugar (TS) levels and glucose (G) concentrations in the blood.
Glucophage XR® has contraindications to the use of sulfonyl phenyl butoxide, metformin, warfarin, and antidiabetic agents, and to some anti-inflammatory drugs, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the cyclo-oxygenase (COX) isoforms (eg, ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, celecoxib).
There are some contraindications for use of antidiabetic agents in adults and children under 18 years of age. These conditions may affect the results obtained with antidiabetic agents. If any of these conditions are present, the antidiabetic agent should be discontinued and the dose reduced immediately before or after the dose reduction. The following antidiabetic agents have been reported to have a possible effect on the levels of glucose and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activity:
Glucophage XR® may also cause gastrointestinal symptoms (such as diarrhea and flatulence) in patients receiving oral diabetes medication. If any of these symptoms occur, the patient should be hospitalized and the patient should receive food and liquid support with the aid of an antacid (eg, magnesium hydroxide or aluminum hydroxide).
Glucophage XR® may also cause headache, dizziness, drowsiness, abnormal vision, muscle pain or tenderness, and nausea. If any of these effects persist or worsen, contact the healthcare provider immediately.
The safety and efficacy of the use of Glucophage XR® in children under the age of 18 years have not been established. Patients are advised not to take this medicine or any other drug together with any antidiabetic agent while being treated with it. It is not recommended to combine Glucophage XR® with other medications that may be used to treat hyperglycemia (hypoglycemia).
In patients with hypoglycemia (e.g., severe hypoglycemic crisis), glucose levels should be monitored regularly and the dosage reduced. It is important that glucose monitoring is performed during treatment with Glucophage XR® to avoid the development of severe hypoglycemia (e.g., severe hypoglycemia with a lower dose of Glucophage XR®).
Glucophage XR® is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Do not combine Glucophage XR® with other diabetes medications or with corticosteroids (including glucocorticoids) including corticosteroids, anti-inflammatory agents, anti-platelet agents, anticoagulants, methotrexate, bile acid sequestrants, antidiabetic agents, and the anti-diabetic agent, sulfonyl phenyl butoxide.
